Red, yellow or blue: Here's what India's battis actually mean

April 20, 2017, 1:45 p.m.

The Union cabinet has decided to ban the use of lal battis or red beacons by VVIPs. This is a momentous occasion. The obsolete system promotes the feeling of elitism and as right said by Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, has no place in a democracy. Different coloured beacons however, hold a different significance.  After May 1, only Ambulances, Fire services, Police and Army (during emergencies) will be allowed beacons. That too only blue ones!
