Ravi Shastri all set to become India's head coach? Has Kohli's backing?

Highlights

  • Ravi Shastri is all set to apply for the post of India’s head coach
  • BCCI decided to invite for more applications after Anil Kumble’s exit last week
  • Ravi Shastri who was the team director had made way for Anil Kumble to become India's head coach

Ravi Shastri might become India’s coach after all. The former Indian cricket team’s director is all set to apply for the post of India’s head coach. This comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to invite for more applications after Anil Kumble’s exit last week.

Ravi Shastri, to the New Indian Express, said, “Yes, I have decided to apply for the job.”

He also said that the reports about him wanting an assurance of getting the job are rubbish.

The Committee of Administrators was not happy with BCCI for inviting new applications for the head coach role. They claimed that the BCCI by-passed the Supreme Court constituted COA and did not bother to inform them. In fact, the COA even questioned BCCI CEO Rahul Johri if the invitation for new applications were at the behest of Virat Kohli given the Indian skipper openly backs Ravi Shastri. It is also reported that Kohli was unhappy when the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman decided to replace Ravi Shastri with Kumble.

Shastri, who was the team director after former coach Duncan Fletcher departed, had made way for Kumble last year. Kumble had a successful stint with India that saw them win nearly everything except the Champions Trophy.

Shastri is in London and will be back in India by the third week of July.

The BCCI has already received applications from Virendra Sehwag, Tom Moody, Dodda Ganesh, Lalchand Rajput and Richard Pybus. With Ravi Shastri in the fray, the battle is going to be all the more intense.
